Q & A About the "Special Edition"

Interview Date: 8/22/2005

Q: Why a special edition?
Joel: We wanted to do a special edition for a couple of reasons. One of them being when I wrote the first film, I really wasn't sure at the time what we were entirely capable of doing with special effects. Now with some of the things we are working on for Fool's Errand, we have the opportunity to bring the original film up a notch. Another reason for the special edition is to better tie the film to its upcoming sequels.
Webb: When you make a Star Wars fan film you have to have a lightsaber fight... It's what makes it a "Star Wars" movie. Likewise, if you ever make a sequel, you have to make the 'Special Edition' of the original film... it's just the Star Wars way. *laughs*

Q: You mentioned Fool's Errand. Is that film being put on the backburner for the special edition?
Joel: Only kind of. Fool's Errand has more than twice the effects load of the original SOTF and we can safely say that it won't be ready by December '05 as we had originally hoped. Because the special edition only requires us to add new scenes to an existing film, we can release it in a shorter amount of time.. Giving the fans something to watch and know that we are in the process of finishing this trilogy.
Webb: Once again, in the M.O. of our flanneled friend, we're hoping to get people excited about our original movie again through this Special Edition release and shortly following be able to see the next installment.

Q: What can we expect from the special edition?
Webb: Adding backstory, without having to do a prequel movie. *shudders* And... Cool new special effects, of course. *grins*
Joel: New scenes, obviously. Kyle Katarn (Joel Cranson) will return for a very intense new scene as well as Jaina Solo (Jessica Bishop) and Spince Larrin (Nathan Blaine). The character of Kit Parson (Kevin Herrmann) will be explored further in these additions scenes as well. Fans of the Dark Forces: Jedi Knight game will also be pleased to see a couple of new faces in the film as well.

Q: When will production on the film begin?
Joel: The pre-production has already begun! We've put together some animatics and have begun designing sets, props, etc. Filming will begin in late September and should finish by the first week of October.
Webb: Yeah, the animatics are classic. We got frustrated with drawing storyboards, as neither of us are artists. Joel took the opportunity to pull out some of his action figures and put together a short live-action video of his vision. That's definitely going on the DVD as an easter egg!

Q: Webb, will you be taking the opportunity to fix the "magic fruit" ?
Webb: No. There are some things that are just too classic to touch.

Q: When will the special edition be released?
Webb: Well, as with all fan films it'll be done when it's done.
Joel: However, our goal is to have it done by December, 2005.
